freshwater fish

rainbow trout (oncorhynchus mykiss)

one of my absolute favorite fish ^_^ rainbow trout are beautiful fish with multicolored markings found in north american rivers and lakes west of the rockies. these fish can spend their entire lives in fresh or sometimes brackish water (referred to as 'resident' trout), but some will migrate out to the sea and turn into steelhead trout.

though part of the salmon family, steelhead don't die after swimming back to the streams they were birthed in to spawn. in fact, steelhead are able to go back to sea and come back to their birthplaces to spawn several times before the ends of their lifespans.

there's something i find so alluring about this fish. maybe it's the fact that despite undergoing metamorphoses once they reach the salty waters of the sea, steelhead still know where their home lies and how to return. it's comforting to imagine myself as a steelhead / rainbow trout -- imagining that even if i were to change, to twist into some less recognizable person, i might still know where 'home' is and where my heart belongs.

cherry salmon (oncorhynchus masou)

nothing too deep here, i just love their subtle coloration and shape. cherry salmon are also called 'masou' and are native to china, japan, korea, and russia. there also exists a variant in taiwan called oncorhynchus masou formosanus. i first learned about this fish from animal crossing ^_^

asian arowana (scleropages formosus)

i just think these fish are so beautiful. they're the most prized and expensive aquarium fish in asia, commonly compared to chinese dragons. i love watching them swim.
